Surgery involving the chest is termed “thoracic surgery”. A thoracic surgery may be performed for diseases of the heart, lungs, esophagus, mediastinum or ribs. Thoracic surgery is done via a thoracotomy. A thoracotomy is a procedure in which a surgeon accesses areas within the chest cavity to analyze any problems with the heart including the heart, esophagus, diaphragm and the aorta. This procedure is generally performed when a patient requires the removal of all or part of a lung, or needs immediate treatment for disease.
There are two thoracotomy approaches. A median sternotomy is done by making an incision along the sternum (breastbone). An intercostal thoracotomy is done by incising the muscles in between the ribs and then spreading them
Thoracic surgery includes treatment for Lung cancer, mesothelioma, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, decortication, pneumothorax, empyema, pulmonary TB, Hemoptysis, chest injury, thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, esophageal problems, video assisted resection of mediastinal tumors, video assisted thymectomy, chest wall tumors and deformities, diaphragmatic hernia.
Advanced Thoracic Surgery
What is advanced Thoracic Surgery?
The diseases arising from chest are often complex (like multi drug resistant infections, re operative cases, other associated co-morbidities, chest trauma, etc.) and potentially life threatening. The advanced thoracis surgery is all about treating these conditions using best use of modern technologies like thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, robotics and small incisions. The team of experts like pulmonologists, anaesthesiologists, anaesthesiologists, critical care specialists and many more alongside me takes care of patients.
